When you are purchasing fine jewelry, the metal you choose is just as important as the stone it holds. At The Top Jewelers, we often get asked: “What is the real difference between Gold and Platinum?” The answer depends on your lifestyle, your budget, and your aesthetic preferences.
Yellow Gold is a timeless classic. It is a mixture of pure gold and alloy metals like copper and zinc. It is relatively easy to maintain and has a warm glow that complements many skin tones. White Gold, on the other hand, is gold mixed with white metals and plated in rhodium for a bright, silvery finish. It will eventually need “re-rhodium” plating to maintain its color, a service we provide right here in our Arlington shop.
Platinum is in a category of its own. It is naturally white, so it never needs plating. It is also significantly denser than gold, making it feel heavier and more substantial. While gold wears away over decades, platinum “displaces”—meaning the metal shifts rather than disappears. This makes it an excellent choice for engagement rings that will be worn every day. However, it is more expensive and requires specialized tools to work with—tools that we have on-site at The Top Jewelers. Our knowledgeable staff can help you feel the difference in person and decide which metal is the perfect match for your next piece.
